NEW YORK (April 22, 2014) – D’Angelo Harrison of St. John’s won the Haggerty Award, presented to the All Met Division I men’s player of the year by the Met Basketball Writers Association. Steve Masiello of Manhattan was named Coach of the Year for a second time. Jon Severe of Fordham was selected Rookie of the Year.

The Second Team: A.J. English, Iona; Rhamel Brown, Manhattan; JaKarr Sampson, St. John’s; Kyle Wilson, Army; Alex Rosenberg, Columbia; Branden Frazier, Fordham.

The Third Team: David Laury, Iona; Kadeem Jack and Myles Mack, Rutgers; Sidney Sanders Jr., FDU; Zeke Upshaw, Hofstra; Eugene Teague, Seton Hall.

The All Met First and Second teams were honored Tuesday evening at the 81st NIT/MBWA Haggerty Awards dinner at the Westchester Marriott, Tarrytown, NY.


This is the 25th time a player from St. John’s has won the Haggerty Award. The last to gain the nod was Marcus Hatten in 2002.

A 6-4 junior guard from Missouri City, TX, Harrison led the Red Storm and was fourth in the Big East in 2013-14 with 17.5 ppg. He shot 86.1% FT and became the school’s all-time 3-point leader with 198 made, including 64 this season. He also had 4.9 rpg, 62 assists, 576 total points and ranks 10th on the Red Storm career list with 1,601 points.

Masiello guided the Jaspers (25-8) to the MAAC tournament championship, earning the team’s most amount of victories and first conference playoff crown since 2004. Manhattan bowed out of the NCAA tournament by losing to Louisville. Currently on leave to complete his undergraduate degree, Masiello also was named Met Coach of the Year in 2012 and now has a 60-39 record in three seasons at the helm.


A 6-3 freshman guard from Brooklyn, NY, Severe was second on the Rams and fourth in the Atlantic 10 with 17.3 ppg, led his team and was fifth in the conference with 79 3-pointers (fifth most in school history), added 63 assists and set a Fordham freshman scoring record with 536 points.
