MBWA’s George Rodecker, 65, Passes Away
NEW YORK --- George W. “Roadie” Rodecker, a member of the Met Basketball Writers Assn’s Executive Committee, died on Dec. 24, 2015, two days shy of his 65th birthday. A resident of New Windsor, NY, in Orange County, Rodecker passed away at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY.
Rodecker had been suffering from heart problems the past several years, and had undergone several heart surgeries.
He was a self-made sportswriter noted for his expertise in analyzing the NBA Draft and was well-respected as a writer and advocate for women’s college basketball. He was a member of the MBWA’s Player of the Week media panel, the Wooden Award Selection Board and, for many years, was coordinator of the Met Writers’ Women’s Division I All-Met awards program as a segment of the annual NIT/MBWA Haggerty Awards.
Rodecker was born on Dec. 26, 1950, in Jersey City, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Dec. 30, 2015, at St. Mary’s Church in Washingtonville, NY, where he was a member and usher. He is survived by his wife, Daria, several children and step-children, a grand-daughter, and other relatives.
