NEW YORK (April 1, 2015) – Chris Gonzales, the Director of Sports Information at Lehman College, is this year's recipient of the Mike Cohen "Good Guy" Award from the Met Basketball Writers Assn. He will be honored on Wednesday, April 22, at the 82nd NIT/MBWA All-Met Haggerty Awards dinner.
The Haggerty dinner, to be held at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, NY, is the longest running media-managed college basketball awards program in the United States.
Gonzales began his tenure at Lehman in New York City in September 2012. He oversees media and public relations for the Lightning's 18 varsity sports, including maintenance of the athletic department's website (LehmanAthletics.com) plus Facebook and Twitter accounts.
A Yonkers, NY, native, Gonzales joined Lehman after serving as the General Manager for MAAC Sports Properties. Previously, he also served as Interim Assistant Director of the CUNY Athletic Conference (2009-10). Other previous college work experience includes stints at Mercy as an Assistant Athletics Director (2010-11), Manhattanville (1994-96) and Worcester (MA) Polytechnic Institute. He rose to the level of Vice President at both Sports Systems Services and PrestoSports, building relationships with colleges and universities across the country.
Gonzales has spent years working both collegiate and professional sports events. He has worked NCAA Championships in, among others, men's and women's basketball, men's ice hockey, gymnastics, men's and women's lacrosse, and women's rowing, as well as college football Nokia Sugar Bowl, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament and the Cancun Challenge. He also has worked events for the New York Jets Radio Network, the Baltimore Ravens, New York Mets and playoff baseball with the New York Yankees.
A former Division III student-athlete at Hobart College, he graduated in 1993 with a B.A. in Classics. He currently resides in Nanuet, NY, with his wife Meghan.
The MBWA's "Good Guy" Award is named in memory of Mike Cohen, former head of sports information at NBC Sports and Manhattan College, and former publicity director at Yonkers Raceway. He also was a consultant to Fordham University and operated his own public relations firm prior to his untimely passing in 1988 at the age of 44. Anyone involved in college basketball in the Met area is eligible for this award; the only criteria is that they --- male or female --- be a "Good Guy."
