Jarosz, Richardson-Smith, Rowland Win Women's Players of the Week
NEW YORK (Jan. 19, 2016) ---
Tori Jarosz of Marist and
Tabatha Richardson-Smith of Seton Hall, as co-winners, and
MacKenzie Rowland of Queens have been named Women’s Division I and Divisions II-III Players of the Week, respectively, by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Jan. 11-17, are unique in that they encompass players from 74 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
A 6-3 senior center from Cortlandt Manor, NY, Jarosz --- who also was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the week --- led the Red Foxes (7-11) to three conference victories, defeating Manhattan, Iona and Monmouth. She averaged a double-double for the week with 24 ppg on 60% (27-of-45) shooting along with 13.3 rebounds per game.
Jarosz scored a career-high 27 points and tied a career-high in rebounds with 17, along with a game-high six blocked shots, in a 79-73 victory at Manhattan. She led the Red Foxes with 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting and had 13 rebounds in handing visiting Iona its first MAAC loss of the season, 62-61. In Marist’s final game of the week, a 78-55 win over visiting Monmouth, Jarosz notched her 13th double-double of the season by scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds along with three blocks in 31 minutes of action.
A 6-0 senior guard from Bay City, TX, Richardson-Smith --- who also was named Big East Conference player of the week --- averaged 24.5 points and 10 rebounds as Seton Hall (14-4) went 1-1 on the road.
She posted 20 points and 12 rebounds in a 55-54 loss to Villanova, then registered 29 points and eight rebounds in an 83-75 victory at Georgetown. Her 49 points for the week moved Richardson-Smith into fourth place on the Pirates all-time scoring list at 1,629 points.
A 6-2 senior forward-center from Albany, NY, Rowland averaged 21 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks in a 2-0 week for the Knights (7-6), connecting on 21-of-27 shots from the field.
Rowland opened the week with 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting, along with 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals and three blocks in a 62-50 win over visiting Molloy. She then racked up 24 points on 12-of-14 shooting along with 20 rebounds, four assists and five blocks in a 91-42 victory at Dowling.
