Richardson-Smith, Barnes Capture Women's Weekly Awards
NEW YORK (Jan. 26, 2016) ---
Tabatha Richardson-Smith of Seton Hall, for a second consecutive week, and
Crystal Barnes of SUNY Old Westbury have been named Women’s Division I and Divisions II-III Players of the Week, respectively, by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Jan. 18-24, are unique in that they encompass players from 74 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
A 6-0 senior guard from Bay City, TX, Richardson-Smith --- who also was named Big East player of the week for a second straight week --- averaged 26.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in a 2-0 week at home for the Pirates (16-4). She nailed 19-of-34 (55.9%) shots from the field and 12-of-13 (92.3%) at the foul line in the two games.
Richardson-Smith posted 27 points, seven rebounds and five assists in an 82-66 victory over Xavier. She followed with her third double-double of the season: a 26-point, 11-rebound effort, along with five assists, in a 98-77 victory over. Butler.
Richardson-Smith now has moved up to third on Seton Hall’s all-time scoring list with 1,711 career points.
A 5-10 senior center from Brooklyn, NY, Barnes --- who also was named Skyline Conference player of the week --- had a monster week off the glass, averaging 19.5 rebounds while posting 14.0 points, 2.0 blocks and 2.0 steals in a 2-0 conference week for the Panthers (14-3).
She had 13 rebounds and 14 points in a 68-56 win over visiting St. Joseph’s-LI. She then posted her ninth double-double this season and 19th lifetime with a career-high 26 rebounds and 14 points in a 73-48 victory at Farmingdale State.
