FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Broome, Ferguson, McDaniel Capture MBB Players of the Week

NEW YORK (Feb. 23, 2016) --- Cane Broome of Sacred Heart and Kevin Ferguson of Army West Point, as co-winners, and Jordan McDaniel of Rutgers-Newark have been named Men’s Division I and Divisions II-III Players of the Week, respectively, by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.

The designations, for games played Feb. 15-22, are unique in that they encompass players from 74 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.

A 6-0 sophomore guard from East Hartford, CT, Broome --- who also was named Northeast Conference player of the week --- led the Pioneers (11-16) to a 2-0 week by averaging 33.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals.

He began his week by leading all players with 27 points and pulling down 10 rebounds in a 74-57 road win over Bryant. Next, he erupted for a career-high 39 points on 50% field goal shooting in a 91-86 away victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. The performance marked the first time an NCAA player recorded at least 39 points, six rebounds and six assists in a single game with zero turnovers since 2010. His scoring total represented the most in the NEC since 2013.

Broome, having now surpassed 1,000 career points, ranks 35th on SHU’s all-time scoring list.

A 6-10 senior center from Berkeley Heights, NJ, Ferguson --- who also was named Patriot League player of the week --- played a key role with his fifth and sixth consecutive double-doubles as the Black Knights (17-11) racked up a pair of league victories with a 72-68 win at home over Holy Cross and a scintillating 80-78 double-overtime triumph on the road at Navy.

Ferguson began his week with a career-high 25-points on 12-of-16 shooting from the floor along with 13 rebounds in the win over Holy Cross.

Against Navy, he chalked up 22 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, and scored the winning basket on a putback with 0.7 seconds left.

For the week, Ferguson shot 66.7% from the field (20-of-30), hit 7-of-9 at the free throw line, and averaged 23.5 points and 16 rebound pere game. He leads the Patriot League in double-doubles (10), field goal percentage (62.5%) and rebounds per game (9.5 rpg).

A 6-5 senior forward from Colonia, NJ, McDaniel averaged 31 points and eight rebounds as Rutgers-Newark (20-6) went 2-0 last week, earning a 95-94 double overtime away win over Ramapo in the regular-season finale and a 78-52 homecourt rout of William Paterson in the first round of the NJAC Tournament.

McDaniel poured in a career- and NJAC season-high 44 points on 15-of-23 shooting, including 4-of-9 from three and 10-of-12 at the line in the win over Ramapo. He added 10 rebounds for a double-double and his driving layup with four seconds left in the second overtime proved to be the game-winner.

He then scored a game-high 18 points in the NJAC playoff win over Paterson, adding six rebounds as the Raiders led by as many as 31 points midway through the second half.

McDaniel scored 62 points in all, needing just 37 total shots to do it. He went 6-of-13 from 3-point range (46%), 12-of-15 at the line (80%) and shot 59% overall (22-of-37).

The win over Ramapo gave Rutgers-Newark the third seed in the NJAC Tournament, and the win over Paterson propelled the Scarlet Raiders into the conference semis at Stockton on Wednesday night.
