Adams, Brown Named WBB Players of the Week
NEW YORK (Feb. 9, 2016) ---
Joy Adams of Iona and
Shalette Brown of FDU-Florham have been named Women’s Division I and Divisions II-III Players of the Week, respectively, by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Feb. 1-7, are unique in that they encompass players from 74 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
A 5-11 senior forward from Orlando, FL, Adams --- who also was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the week --- continued to substantiate her status as Iona and the MAAC’s all-time leading rebounder and one of the most prolific rebounders in the NCAA. She averaged 19.3 rebounds along with 15.7 points per game in a 3-0 conference week for the Gaels (16-9), and ranks sixth in Division I with 12.6 rpg for the season.
In a 79-76 overtime victory at Canisius, Adams posted 22 points and a team-high 12 rebounds along with two assists, two steals and two blocks. She recorded 24 rebounds, distributed evenly with 12 each offensively and defensively, plus 12 points and eight assists in a 68-56 homecourt win over Monmouth. To cap the week, Adams racked up 20 rebounds and 12 points in just 29 minutes playing time as the Gaels beat Rider 67-48.
A 5-10 senior forward from Somerset, NJ, Brown --- who was named MAC Freedom conference player of the week for the fourth time this season --- shot 60% from the field in helping the Devils extend their winning streak to six with conference victories over King’s (66-55) and Eastern (78-64).
Fourth in Division III with 14.4 rpg and also ranked fourth in the NCAA with 17 double-doubles this season, Brown scored 17 points and pulled down 19 rebounds to go with three assists, two blocks and two steals against King's. She next scored a career-high 31 points on 13-of-18 shooting plus had 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block against Eastern.
