McGill, Stanley Selected Men's Players of the Week
NEW YORK (Jan. 31, 2017) ---
Rickey McGill of Iona in Division I and
Jamail Stanley of Old Westbury in Divisions II-III have been named Men’s Players of the Week, respectively, by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Jan. 23-29, are unique in that they encompass players from 74 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
The MBWA selection is the third this season for Schettino, who previously was named Met Divisions II-III Player of the Week on Dec. 13 and Jan. 17.
A 6-1 sophomore guard from Spring Valley, NY, McGill helped lead the Gaels (15-8) to an unbeaten 3-0 week as Iona moved up to second place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Averaging 15.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals while playing 37.3 minutes per game, McGill put together back-to-back career scoring performances en route to shooting 47.2% from the field, 40.0% beyond the arc and 90.0% at the free throw line.
Normally more of a floor general and less a pure scorer, McGill began his week by posting 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists along with three steals as Iona beat Quinnipiac 84-74. He followed by registering a career-high 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting and 5-of-5 at the free throw line in a 77-66 triumph at Siena.
McGill closed the week in a key 69-66 MAAC overtime win over St. Peter’s with an even-handed four points, four rebounds, five assists and a steal. He sank a pair of clutch free throws in the closing seconds of OT to help seal the victory.
A 6-3 senior guard from Syracuse, NY, Stanley --- who also was named the Skyline Conference player of the week --- helped propel the Panthers (11-7) to three wins against no losses. He averaged 25.7 points, 13.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.3 steals and 2.0 blocks while shooting 58.5% (31-of-53) from the field.
Stanley contributed game-highs of 25 points and 15 rebounds in Old Westbury's 90-57 non-conference road win over Medgar Evers. He followed with 19 points, 12 rebounds, four steals, three blocks and three assists in an 80-57 home win versus the U.S, Merchant Marine Academy. In the Panthers 91-57 home victory over Sage, Stanley matched his career-high with 33 points and added 12 rebounds in recording his 13th double-double of the season and 26th of his career.
