Reyes, Anderson Repeat Atop All-Met Division II Men's Teams
NEW YORK (April 21, 2017) – Justin Reyes of St. Thomas Aquinas has been named a repeat All-Met Division II men’s college basketball Player of the Year by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
Tobin Anderson of STAC was selected Coach of the Year for a third consecutive season.
The rest of the All Met First Team: Charlie Marquadt and Jaylen Morris, Molloy; Jon Feiler, NYIT; Nick Davidson, Bloomfield; Gerrel Irvin, Dominican.
The Second Team: Manny Suarez and Michael Coffey, Adelphi; Tyree White, Queens; Chaz Watler, St. Thomas Aquinas; Terrell Spaulding, Felician; Jaden Heath, Concordia.
The All-Met players and coach was honored Wednesday, April 26, at the 84th NIT/MBWA Haggerty Awards dinner at the Westchester Marriott, Tarrytown, NY.
A 6-4 junior guard from Haverhill, MA, Reyes --- who also was named East Coast Conference player of the year for a second time and tabbed an NABC All-American --- helped lead the Spartans (28-6) to the ECC regular season title and into the Elite Eight stage of the NCAA tournament. He led STAC and was second in the conference with 20.6 ppg, had 9.3 rpg and led the ECC with 660 points scored.
Reyes tied for 11th in the nation with 15 double-doubles, was 14th nationally shooting 62.2% from the field, and added 2.2 steals, 1.5 blocks and 2.8 assists. He has scored 1,537 points so far in his three seasons at STAC.
In his fourth season at the helm (91-36, .717 W-L pct.), Anderson --- who also was named MBWA coach of the year in 2015 and 2016 --- guided the Spartans (28-6) to their third straight 20+ wins season, third consecutive ECC regular season championship, second conference tournament title in a row and second straight NCAA berth. Along the way, STAC scored 81.6 ppg (tops in the ECC, 27th nationally) while allowing 74.0 ppg (second-lowest in the ECC). St. Thomas Aquinas lost its Elite Eight NCAA quarterfinal game 79-70 to eventual national champion Northwest Missouri State.
