Brelove, Johnson, Hunter Earn First Weekly Awards of Season
NEW YORK (Dec. 4, 2018) ---
Curteeona Brelove of St. John's and
Shorty Johnson of Stony Brook, as co-winners in Division I, and
Lauren Hunter of USMMA in Divisions II-III, have been named Women’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Nov. 26-Dec. 2, are unique in that they encompass players from 73 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
A 6-2 senior forward from Malone, FL, Brelove averaged 15 points in helping the Red Storm (5-2) to a 1-1 record last week. She shot 60% (9-of-15) from the field in tying a career-high with 20 points and finishing one off her career-best with 13 rebounds en route to an 82-44 homecourt victory over Delaware State. She then was one of three St. John’s players to finish in double figures on the road in a 64-59 loss to Wake Forest, posting 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting.
A 5-1 senior guard from Frederick, MD, Johnson --- who also was named America East co-player of the week --- averaged 17 points and 10.5 assists in leading the Seawolves (6-1) to a 2-0 mark at home last week. She broke the conference single-game assist record with 15 while adding 17 points, four rebounds and three steals in an 87-50 triumph over New Paltz. Then she registered 17 points, four rebounds and a game-high six assists in Stony Brook’s 63-61 victory over Cornell.
A 5-11 freshman forward from Tinley Park, IL, Hunter --- who also was named Skyline Conference player of the week --- recorded double-doubles, and averaged 24 points and 14 rebounds, in all three road victories last week for the unbeaten Mariners (4-0).
She began with 37 points and 14 rebounds in a 74-65 victory at Hunter, followed with a 29-point, 16-rebound performance in a 72-49 win at Sarah Lawrence and closed with 16 points and 12 rebounds in a 74-37 triumph over Medgar Evers.
