Sire Repeats as Div. III Player of the Year, Lang Tabbed Top Coach

NEW YORK (April 17, 2018) – Katie Sire of Montclair State has been named the All-Met Division III women’s college basketball Player of the Year for a second consecutive season by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
 
Alex Lang of Brooklyn College was selected Coach of the Year.
 
The rest of the All Met First Team: Kaitlyn Read, NYU; Megan Brown, Steven; Christina Pasaturo, Staten Island; Karen Mak, Brooklyn; Kendrea Williams, FDU-Florham.
 
The Second Team: Andrea Iavarone, St. Joseph’s-LI; Charlotte Renker, Old Westbury; Kate Tobie, Montclair State; Jade Aponte, Hunter; Lynda Fields, Lehman.
 
The Third Team: Shannon Barrett, Baruch; Monique Joseph, Old Westbury; Taylor George, Brooklyn; Gabrielle Harris, FDU-Florham; Ashley Brooks, CCNY.
 
The All-Met First and Second Team players and coaches will be honored April 25 at the 85th NIT/MBWA Haggerty Awards dinner at the Westchester Marriott, Tarrytown, NY.
 
A 5-10 senior guard from Hazlet, NJ, Sire --- who also was selected New Jersey Athletic Conference player of the year for a second straight season and named a WBCA Division III All-American --- led MSU (25-4) to both NJAC regular season and tournament titles for a sixth consecutive year, and into the Sweet Sixteen round of the NCAA Tournament.  She paced the Red Hawks with 21.2 ppg (11th in the nation, No. 1 in NJAC) and rebounding (8.7 rpg), and had 70 steals, 67 assists and 22 blocks while shooting 50.7% from the field and 80.1% at the free throw line. Sire finished her career with 1,758 points, No. 4 all-time on the Montclair State scoring list.                                      521
 
In his 16th season at Brooklyn, Lang --- who also was named CUNYAC coach of the year --- guided the Bulldogs (24-4) to their first CUNYAC championship since 1980 and their first ever NCAA Tournament berth, matching a program-best in victories. After having lost nine players, including four starters, from the previous season, Brooklyn won its conference regular season title and was ranked high nationally in many statistical categories, including rebounds, turnovers forced, steals, scoring defense and scoring margin. A Bronx, NY, native and Albany (NY) State grad who lives in Franklin Square, NY, Lang’s career coaching record at Brooklyn is 256-184 (.753 win pct).
