Johnson, Edringer, Zaborowska Claim Weekly Awards
NEW YORK (Dec. 17, 2019) ---
Stella Johnson of Rider in Division I, along with
Leonie Edringer of Adelphi and
Anna Zaborowska of Farmingdale in Divisions II-III, have been named Women’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Dec. 9-15, are unique in that they encompass players from 71 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
A 5-10 senior guard from Denville, NJ, Johnson --- who also was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the week --- poured in a game-high 30 points on 10-of-18 shooting to lead the Broncs (5-2) to a 65-64 triumph at Georgetown in Rider’s only contest of the week. Along with her scoring, she added eight rebounds and four steals. For the school, it was the third victory over a major conference opponent this season, having previously defeated the Big Ten’s Penn State and the Big East’s Xavier.
Johnson leads the nation in scoring with 29.4 points per game and is tops in the MAAC with 3.3 steals per contest.
A 6-1 senior forward from Trier, Germany, Edringer averaged a team-leading 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds as the undefeated and No. 21 ranked Panthers (11-0) captured a pair of victories on the road, defeating Pace 74-68 and toppling East Stroudsburg 82-77 in overtime. She shot 46.7% from the field and hit 7-of-8 free throws for the week.
Edringer began with a double-double by scoring a team-high 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting to go with 10 rebounds in the win at Pace. Next she registered 20 points, nine rebounds and two blocks at East Stroudsburg, including a saving block on the final shot of regulation to help send that game in to overtime.
A 5-9 junior guard from East Patchogue, NY, Zaborowska --- who also was named the Skyline Conference player of the week --- erupted for a career-high 37 points on 14-of-21 shooting to help the Rams (4-5) defeat visiting Yeshiva 92-82 in their only game of the week. She added eight rebounds, seven assists, two steals and a block while tying the school record for 3-pointers made in a game by nailing 9-of-10 from beyond the arc.
