FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Gilmer, Dawson Claim Women’s Weekly Awards to Start 2020

NEW YORK (Jan. 14, 2020) --- Alana Gilmer of Marist in Division I and Nia Dawson of Baruch in Divisions II-III have been named Women’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.

The designations, for games played Jan. 6-12, are unique in that they encompass players from 71 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.

A 6-foot senior forward from North Easton, MA, Gilmer --- who also was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the week --- shot an eye-opening 76% from the field to lead Marist (11-2) to a pair of victories on the road last week.

Gilmer dropped a team-best 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting to go with seven rebounds in a 90-59 cruise past Canisius.

She followed with 18 points on a perfect 9-of-9 shooting day in just 15 minutes of action as the Red Foxes soared past Niagara 94-67. That output set a Marist record for best in-game field goal percentage with a minimum of eight makes, surpassing Rachele Fitz's previous mark of 91.7%.

On the year, Gilmer is averaging a career-high 17.3 points per game, which is third in the MAAC, and she leads the conference with 55.0% shooting accuracy from the field.

A 5-9 sophomore guard-forward from Bridgehampton, NY, Dawson --- who also was named the CUNY Athletic Conference player of the week --- averaged 23.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists with three double-doubles as the Bearcats (10-2) won a pair of close games at home and a romp on the road last week.

Dawson began the week by compiling 13 points and 13 rebounds, along with six assists and four steals, in a 69-62 homecourt win over John Jay. Next she posted 32 points and 15 rebounds in a 61-34 victory at Medgar Evers. She finished the week with 24 points and 11 rebounds in a 59-56 triumph at home over York.
