Johnson, Bojka Claim Weekly Honors
NEW YORK (Jan. 21, 2020) ---
Stella Johnson of Rider in Division I for the second time this season and
Morina Bojka of Mount Saint Mary in Divisions II-III have been named Women’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Jan. 13-19, are unique in that they encompass players from 71 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
Johnson was previously named MBWA Player of the Week this season on Dec. 17.
A 5-10 senior guard from Denville, NJ, Johnson --- who also was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the week --- recorded a pair of double-doubles while averaging 21 points and 10 rebounds in a pair of MAAC victories last week for the Broncs (12-2). She shot 51.6% (16-of-31) from the field in a 76-72 overtime victory at Marist and in a 70-66 homecourt triumph over Siena.
The leading scorer in Division I in the nation (26.8 ppg), Johnson opened the week with 28 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two assists against Marist. She followed with 14 points, 10 rebounds and three assists versus Siena.
A 5-10 junior forward from Prospect, CT, Bojka --- who also was named Skyline Conference player of the week --- erupted for a career-high 35 points, 14 rebounds, three steals and two assists in a 75-63 victory at College of Mount Saint Vincent. She shot 46.7% (14-of-30) from the field, including nailing 5-of-9 from 3-point range.
Next she registered her fourth double-double of the season with 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor, along with 11 rebounds, a team-high six assists and five steals, in a 62-44 homecourt win over St. Joseph’s of Long Island.
Bojka has tallied double-digit points in every game this season while averaging 18.7 points and 6.6 rebounds. She is shooting 49.8% from the field and 45.7% from 3-point territory.
