Johnson, Lange Named Weekly Winners
NEW YORK (Jan. 28, 2020) ---
Stella Johnson of Rider in Division I and
Payce Lange of Kean in Divisions II-III have been named Women’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Jan. 20-26, are unique in that they encompass players from 71 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
This was the second week in a row that Johnson has been honored and third time overall this season (Dec. 17, Jan. 21).
A 5-10 senior guard from Denville, NJ, Johnson --- the nation’s leading scorer (27.2 ppg) who also was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the week --- averaged 24.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 4.5 steals to propel the MAAC leading Broncs (14-2) to a pair of victories on the road last week. She shot 44.7% (17-of-38) from the field and 41.7% (5-of-12) from 3-point range in the two games.
Johnson began her week with 33 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals and five assists in a 70-55 victory at Canisius, then followed with 15 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals in a 71-55 triumph at Niagara.
A 5-7 senior guard from Tewksbury, NJ, Lange --- who also was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference player of the week --- averaged 21.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists in leading the Cougars (12-6) to two nip-and-tuck victories in three NJAC contests last week. She shot 47.1% (24-of-51) from the floor and 80% (16-of-20) at the free throw line.
Lange began the week with 19 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in a 67-63 road win over College of New Jersey. She followed with 25 points and five rebounds in a 72-70 homecourt triumph over NJCU and concluded with 21 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 70-59 loss at home to perennial power Montclair State.
