Espinoza-Hunter (Seton Hall) Earns Women's Player of the Week
NEW YORK (Jan. 19, 2021) ---
Andra Espinoza-Hunter of Seton Hall has been named Women’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designation, for games played Jan. 11-17, is unique in that it encompass players from 72 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III. This season, however, many schools are not playing basketball or have delayed seasonal starts due to the coronavirus situation, and for this week nominations were only received from Division I programs.
A 5-11 sharpshooting graduate guard-forward from Ossining, NY, Espinoza-Hunter --- who also was named the Big East Conference player of the week --- averaged 24.0 points and was especially potent from long range, drilling at least six 3-pointers in each of the three victories by the Pirates (6-3).
Espinoza-Hunter began the week on Monday in a 79-64 victory at Butler by scoring a game-high 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting from 3-point range. On Friday in a 77-66 win over visiting Marquette, she posted a career-high 25 points with seven more trifectas while adding five rebounds and two steals. She wrapped up the week on Sunday in an 83-68 triumph over visiting Butler with a game-high 24 points, nailing 6-of-7 from downtown along with a career-high eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
Espinoza-Hunter’s seven made 3-pointers on both Monday and Friday tied for the second-most in a single-game in Seton Hall history. For the seven-day span, she was 20-of-30 from beyond the arc.
