Seton Hall's Espinoza-Hunter Repeats as Player of the Week
NEW YORK (Jan. 26, 2021) ---
Andra Espinoza-Hunter of Seton Hall has been named Women’s Player of the Week for a second consecutive by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designation, for games played Jan. 18-24, is unique in that it encompass players from 72 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III. This season, however, many schools are not playing basketball or have delayed seasonal starts due to the coronavirus situation, and for this week nominations were only received from Division I and Division II programs.
A 5-11 graduate student guard from Ossining, NY, Espinoza-Hunter --- who also was named the Big East Conference player of the week for a second straight week --- averaged 29.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in leazding the Pirates (8-3) to an 87-64 victory over St. John’s and an 85-59 triumph over Xavier last week.
On Wednesday at home against St. John’s, Espinoza-Hunter erupted for a career-high 30 points on the strength of 4-of-9 shooting from 3-point range. She also grabbed eight rebounds, dished out three assists and collected four steals in an all-around performance. It is the first time since Jan. 11, 2019, that a Pirate reached the 30-point mark.
Against Xavier on Saturday, Espinoza-Hunter recorded 29 points with four more trifectas while adding four rebounds and a pair of assists.
Espinoza-Hunter is averaging 21.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game this season, supported by 47.6% shooting from beyond the arc and 47.7% accuracy overall from the floor.
