Kiyomi McMiller of Rutgers University has been named Division I Women’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
The designation, for games played Dec. 9-15, is unique in that it encompasses players from 21 Met area Division I schools.
A 5-8 freshman guard from Silver Spring, MD, McMiller --- who also was named the Big Ten Conference freshman of the week ---helped lead the Scarlet Knights (7-4) to a pair of homecourt victories last week, defeating Fairleigh Dickinson 81-58 on Wednesday and Wagner 86-48 on Sunday as she averaged 27.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.5 steals.
Her back-to-back double-doubles consisted of a career-high 30 points and 11 rebounds against FDU followed by 24 points and 10 rebounds against Wagner. McMiller has now surpassed the 20-point plateau in six outings this season.
Overall she leads RU with 20.0 points per game and total assists with 38. Her scoring average is second-best nationally among freshman in Division I, boosted by 45.4% shooting (93-of-205) from the field.
The MBWA Players of the Week program will take a two-week holiday break and resume with games played from Dec. 30 through Jan. 5.
