For the first time in ten seasons, the 2004 Lt. Frank J. Haggerty Award for the best men's Division I college basketball player in the metropolitan area, was a tie between two senior guards, Andre Barrett of Seton Hall and Luis Flores of Manhattan. The 71st annual NIT/MBWA awards dinner was held at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, NJ.
A 5-10 point guard, Barrett led the Pirates in scoring (17.3) and assists (5.9) as a senior. He had 19 points and six assists when the Pirates upset Arizona in the first round of the NCAA tournament before being eliminated by Duke. He finished his career with the most minutes played in school history.
Despite going undrafted, Barrett played parts of the next four seasons in the NBA with six different franchises. During his rookie season, he received a start for the Orlando Magic and proceeded to pour in 12 points and hand out 12 assists against the Milwaukee Bucks, proving his capability given an extended opportunity.
He recently retired after a long professional career and was inducted into the Pirates' Hall of Fame and his #12 jersey officially retired.
