Junior guard Marcus Hatten became St. John's record-setting 20th recipient of the Lt. Frank J. Haggerty Award as the top collegiate men's basketball player by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association on April 24, 2002 at the 69th annual NIT/MBWA collegiate awards dinner at the Giants Stadium Club in the Meadowlands (East Rutherford, NJ).   777

Hatten's first of two seasons at St. John's earned him the prestigiousd Haggety, as the 6-foot-1 guard averaged 20.1 points per game this season and led the Red Storm to a 20-12 record and a berth in the NCAA Eastern Regional at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C. St. John's (the #9 seed) lost to Wisconsin (the #8 seed) 80-70 in the first round of the tournament.

The 6-1 junior from Baltimore, Maryland played his first season at St. John's this year after transferring from Tallahassee Community College. He poured in 644 points in 32 games to lead SJU to a 9-7 mark for a third place finish in the Big East Eastern Division as well as a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to the Haggerty Award, Hatten's postseason accolades this season included being named to the All-Big East First Team while leading the conference in scoring with a 22.3 points per game average. Other honors the junior guard received this season included being named Junior College Transfer of the Year and included as a member of the 10-man All-District II Team as voted by the United States Basketball Writers Association.

After making a brief appearances for the LA Clippers and the Denvern Nuggets as an undrafted free agent in the NBA, Hatten embarked on a 15-year career in Europe and Israel.
