FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hovren, Clark, McDonough Named WBB Players of the Week
NEW YORK (Jan. 17, 2017) ---
Madison Hovren of Army in Division I, along with
Sierra Clark of Adelphi and
Alyssa McDonough of FDU Florham as co-winners in Divisions II-III, have been named Women’s Players of the Week, respectively, by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Jan. 9-15, are unique in that they encompass players from 74 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
A 5-11 sophomore forward from Spokane, WA, Hovren averaged 18.5 points and 14.5 rebounds in a pair of victories for the Cadets (13-4).
She erupted for 30 points and an Army record-tying 22 rebounds(fourth most in a Division I single game this season) in a 76-69 triumph at Colgate. Her 13 made field goals in the game were a career best. After early foul trouble in her next game, Hovren came back later to finish with seven points and seven rebounds to help the Black Knights hold off visiting American 53-51.
Hovren’s 22 rebounds at Colgate matched the team single-game record set by Army Hall-of-Famer Pam Pearson against St. Francis of Illinois on Jan. 2, 1984. The 22 rebounds also matched the league standard for most rebounds in a Patriot League game, equaling the mark set by Kerry Kinek against Bucknell on Feb. 20, 2013.
A 5-11 senior forward from Hughesville, MD, Clark --- who also was named the Northeast-10 Conference player of the week and the MBWA co-Player of the Week for a second time this season (Dec. 20) --- averaged a double-double as the Panthers (15-2) registered a pair of victories last week.
Clark first tallied 20 points and 10 rebounds in a 62-60 win over Bentley in which she drove to the basket and then canned the game-winning free throws with 11 seconds to play. Next she notched a game-high 23 points to go along with 11 boards and two blocks in a 63-46 triumph over Southern New Hampshire.
A 5-7 senior guard/forward from Parlin, NJ, McDonough --- who also was named MAC Freedom conference player of the week --- averaged 15 points, 15 rebounds, 6.5 assists and three steals as the league-leading Devils (13-2) won two games during the week.
She came close to a triple-double with 19 points, 15 rebounds, eight assists and three steals, while shooting 9-of-13 from the floor, to lead FDU Florham’s 83-51 victory over DeSales. Earlier in the week, McDonough posted 15 rebounds to go along with 11 points, five assists and three steals in a 69-59 win over King’s.
