Luciano, Zimmerman, Rowland Nab WBB Weekly Honors
NEW YORK (Feb. 21, 2017) ---
Krystal Luciano of Hofstra and
Camille Zimmerman of Columbia, as co-winners in Division I, and
Madison Rowland of Queens in Divisions II-III, have been named Women’s Players of the Week, respectively, by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Feb. 13-19, are unique in that they encompass players from 74 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
The MBWA selection is the second this season for Zimmerman, who previously was named Met Division I Player of the Week on Jan. 31, and the third season for Rowland, who previously was named Divisions II-III Player of the Week on Dec. 6 and Jan. 31.
A 5-6 senior guard from San Juan, PR, Luciano --- who also was named the Colonial Athletic Association player of the week --- registered the first triple-double in program history with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as the Pride (11-15) defeated UNC Wilmington 66-54 during a 1-1 week on the road. The 21 points tied a career high and the 10 rebounds were a personal best.
Earlier in the week, Luciano posted eight assists and added 10 points as Hofstra lost to Elon 72-61.
A 6-1 junior guard/forward from Tempe, AZ, Zimmerman averaged 24.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, one steal and one block as part of 1-1 week at home for the Lions (13-10). Overall she shot 19-of-48 (39.6%) from the field and nailed 7-of-8 (87.5%) at the free throw line.
Zimmerman began the week by registering game-highs of 28 points and 12 rebounds in a 58-55 loss to Harvard. She then posted game-highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds, plus a career-high seven assists, in leading Columbia to a 69-48 victory over Dartmouth, the Lions first 20-plus points victory over an Ivy League opponent since February 2011.
Zimmerman now is averaging an Ivy League best 22.3 points and 9.8 rebounds on the season. Her 514 total points this season are seven shy of Columbia's Division I record 521 held by Lions Hall of Famer Judie Lomax (2009-10).
A 5-10 senior guard/forward from Albany, NY, Rowland averaged 24.5 points on 55.9% shooting from the floor, along with 10.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 3.0 assists in a 2-0 week for the Knights (23-3).
She registered 28 points on 11-of-19 shooting with eight rebounds, four steals and four assists in a 78-65 homecourt win over Bridgeport. She then grabbed her 1,000th career rebound in a 76-56 win at LIU Post when she tallied 21 points, 12 rebounds and three steals, becoming the first player in school history with 2,000-plus career points and 1,000-plus career rebounds.
