MBWA Taps Sheehan, Wansart for DSA Honors

NEW YORK (April 5, 2017) –- Terry Wansart, the Director of Athletics, Recreation and Intramurals at Hunter College, and Jim Sheehan, Senior Sports Information Director at Hofstra University, will be presented with Distinguished Service Awards by the Met Basketball Writers Assn. at the 84th All-Met Haggerty Awards Dinner on Wednesday, April 26, at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, NY.
 
The Haggerty Dinner is the longest running media-managed college basketball awards program in the United States.
 
A native of New York City, Sheehan came to Hofstra --- which is based in Hempstead, Long Island --- in August 1988 as Sports 446Information Director. His responsibilities over the years have included serving as primary media liaison and publicist for Pride programs in basketball (1988-2001) --- working with coaches Butch van Breda Kolff and Jay Wright --- along with  field hockey, wrestling, men’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s cross country, as well as editor of media guides, programs, notes, records and statistics in those sports.
 
Prior to Hofstra, Sheehan served as Assistant Commissioner for Information at the Gateway Conference in St. Louis, MO, from 1985 to 1988. He also served as Coordinator of Media Information for the Houston Gamblers of the U.S. Football League from October, 1984 through July, 1985, and as Sports Information Director at the University of Tampa, FL, from August 1982 through October, 1984.
 
Sheehan also has worked as Sports Information Director at his alma mater, Biscayne College (1981-82), and as Information Director for the Sunshine State Conference (1980-84).
 
With a Bachelor’s degree in sports administration, Sheehan and his wife, Maureen, reside in Middle Village, NY.
 
At Hunter, which is located in Manhattan, NY, Wansart has served in her current position since 1988. Under her guidance, and 447that of her staff, the Hawks have captured 10 CUNY Athletic Conference Commissioner’s Cups since the awards inception in 1997, the most in CUNYAC. Additionally, with an emphasis on academics as well as athletics, Hunter’s athletes have produced a graduation rate higher than the general student population while also maintaining the average program’s GPA above 3.0. A member of the NCAA’s Division III Management Council, Wansart has achieved numerous facilities and academic support upgrades for athletes at Hunter.
 
A native of Windsor, NY, she first came to Hunter in 1982, as Assistant Athletic Director. At the same time over several years, she posted successful records as coach of the Hawks women’s basketball, volleyball and softball teams. In basketball, her teams won a pair of conference titles and a trip to the ECAC playoffs. Her credits include tenures as president of CUNYAC, NYSWCAA and the Skyline Conference. Wansart is certified by the National Athletic Training Association as an Athletic Trainer as well as being an adjunct professor for more than 20 years.
 
A 1982 graduate of East Stroudsburg (PA) University with Bachelor’s degrees in Health and Physical Education, and a minor in Athletic Training, Wansart added a Master’s degree in Physical Education/Athletic Administration from Hunter in 1985. She resides in Hastings, NY.
