Cavanaugh, Sire Earn Weekly DI, DII-DIII Top Honors
NEW YORK (Jan. 16, 2018) ---
Bre Cavanaugh of Fordham in Division I and
Katie Sire of Montclair State in Divisions II-III have been named Women’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Jan. 8-14, are unique in that they encompass players from 74 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
This was the second weekly selection this season for Cavanaugh, who previously was named on December 19, and the third MBWA pick in a row for Fordham following G’mrice Davis on Jan. 9.
A 5-8 freshman guard from Allemuchy, NJ, Cavanaugh was the leading scorer for Fordham (14-4) in a pair of Atlantic 10 triumphs last week, first scoring 20 points in a 66-58 home win over Davidson, then registering 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals in a 64-54 victory at Virginia Commonwealth.
A 5-10 senior guard-forward from Hazlet, NJ, Sire --- who also was named NJAC player of the week --- helped No. 23 MSU (14-1) stretch its win streak to 12 games by averaging 23.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.5 steals in a pair of victories last week. She shot 51.6% from the field, 44.4% from 3-point range and 84.6% at the free throw line.
Sire had 23 points and nine rebounds along with four assists and two steals in a 62-47 win at Rutgers-Camden. She then scored 24 points, including six in a late-game run, as Montclair got past TCNJ, 54-51. Sire also had four rebounds, four assists and five steals in the victory.
