Meehan, Nesci Named Distinguished Service Award Honorees

NEW YORK (April 9, 2018) –- Kathy Meehan, the Associate Vice President for Athletics at St. John’s University, and Joe Nesci, the winningest coach in New York University history who recently retired, will be presented with Distinguished Service Awards by the Met Basketball Writers Assn. at the 85th All-Met Haggerty Awards Dinner on Wednesday, April 25, at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, NY.

The Haggerty Dinner is the longest running media-managed college basketball awards program in the United States.

Now in her 42nd year of service at St. John’s dating back to her days as a student-athlete, Meehan --- who also holds the title of Senior Woman Administrator --- has served as Associate VP for Athletics since 2001. She oversees Internal Relations, Title IX compliance, human resources, strategic planning and enforcement of the student-athlete Code of Conduct. She is the sports administrator for the Red Storm women’s basketball, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, softball and volleyball teams.

Meehan has represented St. John’s on numerous NCAA and Big East committees during her tenure. She previously served on the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee (2010–15) and was the University's representative for the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Assn. from 2001-05.

A 1975 St. John’s graduate with a Bachelor's degree in education, Meehan earned a Master's degree in counselor education from SJU in 1979. As an undergrad, she was a member of the first women's basketball team at the University (1974-75) and won the first Outstanding Female Student-Athlete Award that same year. She was inducted into the St. John's University Hall of Fame in 1991.

Meehan and her husband, Lou, live in Jackson Heights, NY, and have two sons, Brian and Timothy, and five grandchildren.

Having served as the head coach of men’s basketball at NYU since the middle of the 1988-89 season, Nesci --- who announced his retirement last month --- has coached more games (782) and recorded more victories (512) than anyone else in program history. During his tenure, he guided the Violets to 21 postseason appearances over 28-plus seasons, including seven straight NCAA Tournament appearances (1992-98) and a berth in the NCAA Division III National Championship game in 1993-94. His teams have posted 26 winning seasons, eight with at least 20 wins, and his overall record at NYU is 512-270 (.654 winning pct).

Selected coach of the year four times by the Met Basketball Writers Assn and a three-time University Athletic Assn. coach of the year, Nesci began his career at Xavier High School in Manhattan before joining the staff at NYU.

A native of Brooklyn, NY, who lives with his wife, Jane, on Staten Island, NY, Nesci is a 1979 graduate of Brooklyn College with a B.A. degree in health. He and his wife have three children --- Alyssa, Andrew and Amanda (all NYU grads) --- and one grandchild.
