Olaniyi, Wejnert Selected For First Weekly Awards of the Season
NEW YORK (Dec. 10, 2019) --
Elijah Olaniyi of Stony Brook in Division I and
Peyton Wejnert of Pace in Divisions II-III have been named Men’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Dec. 2-8, are unique in that they encompass players from 71 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
For Pace, the Setters scored a double-double for the week with Lauren Schetter also being selected the MBWA Women’s Player of the Week.
A 6-5 junior guard from Newark, NJ, Olaniyi --- who also was named the America East Conference player of the week --- averaged 23.0 points in leading the Seawolves (7-3) to homecourt victories last week over Manhattan (65-47) and Brown (79-63). He nailed 17-of-30 field goals (56.7%), including 9-of-15 from 3-point range, for the week.
Olaniyi posted 16 points and three rebounds in the win over Manhattan, then struck for a career-high 30 points along with seven rebounds in the triumph over Brown.
A 6-7 senior forward from Point Pleasant, NJ, Wejnert --- who also was named the Northeast-10 Conference player of the week --- averaged 30.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in pacing the undefeated Setters (9-0) to a pair of road victories last week.
Wejnert erupted for a career-high 40 points in a 94-82 win at Saint Rose, then followed with 21 points and 12 rebounds --- his third double-double this season --- in a 68-65 victory at NYIT.
