Heron, Marquez, Washington Tabbed MBB Weekly Award Winners
 
NEW YORK (Feb. 19, 2019) --- Mustapha Heron of St. John's in Division I, and Pedro Marquez of Old Westbury and Keith Washington of Bloomfield as co-winners in Divisions II-III, have been named Men’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
 
The MBWA designations, for games played Feb. 4-10, are unique in that they encompass players from 73 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
 
A 6-5 junior guard from Waterbury, CT, Heron --- who also was named Big East Conference player of the week --- averaged 23.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in helping St. John’s (19-7) achieve a pair of victories over Butler and No. 13-ranked Villanova last week. He shot a combined 54.2% (13-of-24) from the field, 50% (4-of-8) from 3-point range and 85% (17-of-20) at the free throw line.
 
Heron produced a season-high 28 points along with four rebounds and two steals in leading the Red Storm past Butler 77-73 in overtime at on-campus Carnesecca Arena. Next he scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half to to help St. John’s overcome a 19-point deficit to defeat Villanova 71-65 at Madison Square Garden.
 
A 6-0 junior guard from the Bronx, NY, Marquez --- who also was named the Skyline Conference player of the week --- averaged 29 points while shooting 55.9% (19-of-34) from the floor, including 56% (14-of-25) from beyond the arc, as the Panthers (15-10) defeated the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 77-74 at home and toppled St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn 72-67 on the road last week.
 
Marquez registered a career-best 31 points to go with five assists, three rebounds, a block and a steal in the victory over Merchant Marine. Next, in the Panthers regular season finale, he struck for 27 points along with a career-high six steals plus five rebounds, three assists and a block in the win over St. Joseph’s.
 
A 6-1 senior guard from Philadelphia, PA, Washington --- who also was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference player of the week and represents the second Bloomfield player in a row to earn the MBWA weekly designation following Rich Chapman --- averaged a whopping 37.5 points as the Bears (15-9) downed Nyack 95-79 on the road and whipped Wilmington 110-95 at home.
 
Washington posted 30 points, seven assists and three steals in the win at Nyack. Next he netted a career-high 45 points, along with six assists and seven rebounds, in beating Wilmington. Together the victories lifted Bloomfield into first place in the CACC’s North Division.
