The All-Met teams will be honored at the 89th MBWA Haggerty Awards dinner on Monday, April 25, at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, NY. There are 36 colleges and universities under the Met Basketball Division III umbrella.
A 6-7 senior guard from Los Angeles, CA, Turell completed a career for the ages, helping to transform Yeshiva University from a small school for Jewish students into a National Division III powerhouse over the last three seasons. This past year, he set the school's all-time single-season scoring record with 786 points, while shooting 58.7% 299-of-509) from the field and 46.8% (80-of-171) from long distance.
Turell led all three NCAA Divisions with 27.1 points per game enroute to NABC Division III National Player of the Year honors. He also was named NABC All-America First Team, D3Hoops All-America, NABC District 3 player of the year and Skyline Conference player of the year for a second time.
In addition to scoring, Turell averaged 5.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game for the Skyline team champions, as Yeshiva earned its second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Turell has been such a prolific scorer, he scored at least 20 points in 25-of-29 games played this year and netted at least 30 points nine times during the season, including a program single-game best 51 points during a Maccabees victory over Manhattanville. He finished his collegiate career with a school record 2,158 points.
In MBWA annals, there have been nine athletes named Division III Men’s Player of the Year twice; Turell is the first to be so designated three times. Recently, he declared for the NBA Draft and was the only Division III player to be invited to the prestigious Portsmouth Invitational Tournament for the top 64 prospects in the nation.
In his eighth season at the Yeshiva helm, Steinmetz guided the Maccabees (25-4, 14-2) to the Skyline Conference regular season and playoff titles, and to a second consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Maccabees were ranked No. 1 in the country while riding a 50-game winning streak. Their non-league schedule included a triumph over No. 5 nationally ranked University of Saint Joseph from West Hartford, CT.
A 2002 graduate of Yeshiva, Steinmetz has produced a winning season ever since being hired for the 2014-15 campaign. The year before he signed on, the Macs were 7-18. His career coaching record at YU is 142-57, a lofty 71.4% W-L mark.
Yeshiva garnered considerable national and global attention from different media outlets in 2021-22. YU inspired Jewish people from around the world with senior Academic All-American and All-Met First Teamer Leifer and three-time MBWA Player of the Year Turell.
The Haggerty dinner is the longest running, media-managed college basketball awards program in the United States.
