Hofstra's Gorchov to be Honored with the 2025 Mike Cohen 'Good Guy' Award at Haggerty Dinner

NEW YORK (March 20, 2025) --- Stephen Gorchov, the Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Marketing and Communications at Hofstra University, will be honored in April with the Mike Cohen "Good Guy" Award from the Met Basketball Writers Association.

The presentation will be made at the 92nd MBWA All-Met Haggerty Awards dinner scheduled Thursday, April 24, at the Sleepy Hollow Hotel & Conference Center in Tarrytown, NY. The Haggerty dinner is the longest running, media-managed college basketball awards program in the United States.

The MBWA’s “Good Guy” Award is named in memory of Mike Cohen, former head of sports information at NBC Sports and Manhattan College, and former publicity director at Yonkers Raceway. Cohen also was a consultant to Fordham University and operated his own public relations firm prior to his untimely passing in 1988 at the age of 44. Anyone involved in college basketball is eligible for this award; the only criteria is that they --- male or female --- be a “Good Guy.”

Gorchov is in his 25th year as a member of Hofstra’s Office of Athletic Communications. In addition to serving as the school’s primary contact for men’s basketball, he handles volleyball, women’s and men’s lacrosse, and is team administrator for the men’s golf program. He is the spokesperson for Hofstra’s Department of Athletics and is the contact for all administrative related public relations matters.

In his post, Gorchov oversees all social media platforms within the athletic department and manages GoHofstra.com (official website of Hofstra Athletics) and athletics-related Hofstra Sports Media (official streaming platform of Hofstra Athletics).

A Hofstra graduate, Gorchov served as the basketball team’s head manager under former coaches and Met Writers honorees Butch van Breda Kolff (1994 inaugural MBWA Distinguished Service Award recipient) and Jay Wright (2001 MBWA Coach of the Year) from 1992 through 1996, and as volleyball team head manager in 1996 and 1997. After leaving Hofstra, Gorchov served as a marketing and ticket intern at Drexel University from December 1997 to June 1998. He returned to Hofstra in June 1998 and served as an administrative assistant to the Hofstra volleyball program before being named the assistant director of athletic communications in December 1999.

He was named Hofstra’s Associate Director of Athletics for Communications in 2009 and held that role until November 2024 when he assumed his current position.

Gorchov has received numerous awards from CoSIDA, including the 2012-13 men’s basketball guide being chosen fourth-best nationally and the 2013 women’s lacrosse guide being chosen second-best nationally.

A native of Lafayette Hill, PA, Gorchov resides in Farmingdale, NY.
