FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chuck Stogel to be Inducted into NYC Hoops Hall of Fame

NEW YORK (Feb. 13, 2026) --- Charles “Chuck” Stogel, a veteran sportswriter and editor, and the longtime president of the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association, has been chosen for induction into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremonies for the NYC Hoops Hall Class of 2025, which includes seven other distinguished individuals plus one professional and one college basketball team, is scheduled for Tuesday evening, Feb. 24, 2026, at the Hilton Midtown in Manhattan (hoopshallny.org).

Others being inducted are Sue Bird, Stephon Marbury, Richard “Pee Wee” Kirkland, Ron Naclerio, Mo Hicks, John Paquette, Shelly Schneider, the WNBA’s 2024 New York Liberty and the NCAA Division III 2024-25 women’s national champion New York University team.

For more information about the Hall of Fame or about attending the induction dinner: hoopshallny.org.

A member of the Met Basketball Writers since 1975, Stogel became president of the organization in 1980, a position he still maintains today. For years, he and the late Associated Press college basketball editor Jim O’Connell kept the prestigious All-Met Haggerty Awards dinner alive. In 1984, the All-Met awards were expanded to embrace all three NCAA divisions and, in 1996, the MBWA added women’s awards to its roster. The MBWA encompasses 70 colleges and universities in the region.

Nowadays, Stogel works with a nine-member Executive Committee, overseeing vastly expanded programs, including a website (www.metbasketballwriters.org), men’s and women’s Players of the Week across all three divisions, an annual Jim O’Connell Sports Communications Scholarship, special awards such as the Peter Carlesimo/Jack Powers Distinguished Service Award and Mike Cohen Good Guy Award. The Haggerty Awards dinner journal is now 50-plus pages in full color, the MBWA has a “Vote for Plays of the Week” segment and a wide range of social media endeavors.

The awards dinner each April recognizes All-Met men’s and women’s players and coaches in all three divisions, along with the special awards.

“I could never have done this alone, although at first it seemed that way,” said Stogel. “What has been added to our endeavors in recent years has taken the work of many individuals. I am humbled by this accolade being bestowed by the NYC Hoops Hall, and honored to be joining so many worthy inductees, past and present, but I am also very, very proud of how the Met Basketball Writers group has grown and the many activities that we now undertake.”

In addition to serving as MBWA president, Stogel is a past president and member of the Met Golf Writers Association board; president of the White Plains (NY) High School Athletics Hall of Fame at his alma mater, and an inductee; and a member of the Executive Committee overseeing the Glenn D. Loucks Memorial Track & Field Games, among the oldest and largest independent on-campus elite invitationals in the U.S. held each spring in White Plains.

As a public address announcer, Stogel has been announcing the Loucks Games since 1974; multiple sports, including boys and girls basketball, at White Plains HS since 2009; and varsity basketball at Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains since 2015. He has been one of the official scorekeepers for men’s and women’s basketball at Iona University since 2010.

Born and raised in White Plains, Stogel is a 1964 graduate of White Plains High School and 1971 graduate of then-known Utica College of Syracuse University (now independent Utica University) with a Bachelor’s degree in public relations/journalism. He has worked in the publicity departments at both ABC Sports and CBS Sports; was a reporter and editor for seven years at the Utica (NY) Daily Press and Observer-Dispatch, at the same time he was a music, news and minor league hockey play-by-play radio announcer for WZOW-FM in Utica; former sports editor of The Reporter Dispatch and assistant sports editor of the Gannett Westchester Rockland Newspapers; Associated Press reporter for 25 seasons covering Iona and Manhattan basketball, and a beat reporter covering St. John’s basketball in the 1980s; a voter over 10 seasons for the AP Top 20 men’s basketball rankings; executive sports editor of the Middletown (NY) Times Herald-Record; editor/writer for Sports Inc. magazine; New York Bureau Chief for The Sporting News; and managing editor for 16 years at Nielsen’s Brandweek and Mediaweek trade magazines.

Stogel has covered many major sports events in his career, including NCAA Final Fours, NFL Super Bowls, U.S. Open golf championships, plus in horse racing the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Breeders’ Cup races. One of his assignments in 1980 was covering the U.S. Olympic ice hockey team in Lake Placid. He also is a book author and has been published in numerous major newspapers and magazines and, for years, provided program material for Madison Square Garden, the National Invitation Tournament and the NCAA.

Stogel resides in White Plains, NY, with his wife, Chris. They have an adult son, Mitchell, daughter-in-law Maiara, and two young grandchildren, Evelyn Rose and Russell Lee.

WHAT THE MET BASKETBALL COMMUNITY IS SAYING ABOUT CHUCK STOGEL

Rutgers Men’s Basketball Head Coach Steve Pikiell:
“Chuck Stogel is one of the true pillars of New York City basketball. From the moment I started coaching in this area, his passion, integrity, and commitment to the game were impossible to miss. Chuck didn’t just cover basketball — he elevated it, told its stories the right way, and helped shape generations of players, coaches, and fans. His induction into the NYC Hoops Hall of Fame is incredibly well-deserved.”

Hofstra Men’s Basketball Head Coach Speedy Claxton (2000 Haggerty Award winner):
“When you talk about New York City basketball, Chuck Stogel is part of that history. As a former Haggerty Award winner, I understand how meaningful this game is in the city and the impact it can have. Chuck has given so much to New York City basketball over the years, and this induction is a well-deserved honor.”

Associated Press Women’s Basketball Editor (MBWA EC member) Doug Feinberg:
“Chuck has been the heart and soul of the Met Writers Association for decades, making sure that all the basketball teams in the area are honored for their incredible accomplishments throughout the year. He has shown an unmatched dedication to the sport, presiding over the end of season dinner. Chuck has been instrumental in seeing the organization grow year after year. It's an honor to call him a colleague.”

Seton Hall Women's Basketball Head Coach Anthony Bozzella:
“There is no one more deserving of being inducted into the NYC Basketball Hall of Fame! His continued passion and dedication to the sport of basketball is surpassed by no one! Congratulations to a wonderful man and friend!”

President NYC Hoops Hall of Fame Zak Ivkovic:
“For anyone in the NYC basketball community, meeting Chuck Stogel at Mama Leone’s and later at MSG every Tuesday during college basketball season for the media, coaches and SID luncheon has been a right of passage for everyone who was professionally involved in the sport in the Metro NYC area. Every coach, every reporter, every SID and every outstanding player, Division I, II or III - regarded that luncheon as a highlight of their week. The stories and careers that were made or broken on those Tuesdays are with every one of us today. When his name was suggested for nomination - the room lit up - few of us knew that this was not the first time the hoopshallny.org had chosen to induct him - what we learned was just how many times he said no thank you - others are more deserving.

He has led MBWA for over four decades and is the living link between the very beginning of basketball in NYC over 125 years ago - to the young men and women just applying for their first internships or putting on their first collegiate uniform. It is nothing short of a true honor that Chuck finally said yes and that we get the once in a lifetime chance of adding the name of this living legend to the annals of forever in the NYC Basketball Hall of Fame!”

Iona Senior Associate Athletic Director / Communications Brian Beyrer:
“Chuck Stogel’s induction into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame is a truly well-deserved honor. For decades, Chuck has been one of the most respected figures in our sport, a tireless advocate for basketball in the metropolitan area through his leadership with the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association, his distinguished career as a storyteller, and his unwavering commitment to elevating the game at every level.

Here at Iona, Chuck has been an invaluable member of our game day staff for two decades. His professionalism at the scorer’s table and his dedication to creating a first-class experience for student-athletes, coaches, officials, and fans have made a lasting impact on our programs. We are proud to see someone who has poured so much into college basketball receive this recognition, and even more proud to call him part of the Iona community.
