FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Warney, Lynn, Maestre Tabbed MBB Players of the Week
NEW YORK (Dec. 22, 2015) ---
Jameel Warney of Stony Brook and
Damon Lynn of NJIT, as co-winners, and
Anthony Maestre of Manhattanville have been named Men’s Division I and Divisions II-III Players of the Week, respectively, by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Dec. 14-20, are unique in that they encompass players from 74 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
Additionally, with Bri Pabon of Manhattanville named the Women’s Divisions II-III Player of the Week, this is the first time since the MBWA weekly honors were revived last season that men’s and women’s players have hailed from the same school in the same week. Further, that rare honor has only occurred once before in the history of the Met Basketball Writers program --- which previously spanned five seasons from 2004-05 through 2008-09 --- when Hofstra’s Carlos Rivera and Vanessa Gidden earned player of the week accolades on Feb. 26, 2007.
A 6-8 senior forward from Plainfield, NJ, Warney --- who also was named America East player of the week --- averaged 22 points, six rebounds and 3.5 blocks in leading the Seawolves (6-4) to a pair of victories last week.
He first scored 22 points in an 86-68 road victory over America, making his first 10 shots from the floor. He followed that with 10-of-18 shooting and another 22 points in a 71-68 home victory over Hofstra in which he hit two clutch free throws with 20 seconds left to help cinch the win.
A 5-11 junior guard from Hillside, NJ, Lynn --- who also was named Atlantic Sun player of the week --- led the Highlanders (7-5) to an historic 83-74 victory at St. John’s in NJIT’s only outing for the week. In the program’s first victory over a Big East team after 21 losses, Lynn scored a game-high 32 points while adding a season-high six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
His 32 points were an NJIT season-high and two points shy of his own school record of 34 points, accomplished at North Carolina A&T on Jan. 18, 2014. At 7-5, the Highlanders are off to the best 12-game start in program history.
A 5-10 senior guard from Bronx, NY, Maestre erupted for a career-high 31 points in the Valiants (6-4) only game of the week, an 89-75 win at Keystone. He shot 11-of-17 from the field and added five steals, four assists and four rebounds.

Players receiving MBWA Men’s Divisions II-III Honorable Mention for the week: Nick Davidson, Bloomfield; Billy McDonald, Caldwell; K.J. Rose, Mercy; Chaz Watler, St. Thomas Aquinas; Tyree White, Queens.
