2013 MBWA MEN'S DIVISION I ROOKIE OF THE YEAR


JaKarr Sampson, St. John’s


Big East Conference Rookie of the Year. Led BIG EAST freshmen in both scoring (14.9 ppg, 12th overall) and rebounding (6.6 rpg, 11th overall). Had 1.1 rejections (11th in Big East). Captured seven conference Rookie of the Week honors, trailing an elite group of just three former Big East players (Syracuse’s Carmelo Anthony (10), Georgetown’s Allen Iverson (9) and Notre Dame’s Troy Murphy (8).

Guided Seawolves to their second straight America East regular season title and third in the last four years. Set school record for victories in a season (25-8, 13-4). Crafter of a Stony Brook defense that was sixth in the nation in FG% defense (37.8%) and 13th in scoring defense (57.5 ppg). Seawolves led conference in scoring offense, scoring defense, FG% defense and rebounding margin. Held opponents under 60 points 20 times in 33 games, including 10 games holding teams under 50 points and two games under 40 points.
