NEW YORK (Dec. 20, 2022) ---
Joel Soriano of St. John's has been named Division I Men’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
The designation, for games played Dec. 12-18, is unique in that it encompasses players from 21 Met area Division I schools.
A 6-11 senior center from Yonkers, NY, Soriano --- who also was named to the Big East Conference weekly honor roll --- was selected as the Most Valuable Player in the 2022 Orange Bowl Classic last Saturday when the Red Storm (11-1) in their only game of the week defeated Florida State 93-79 at a neutral site in Sunrise, FL.
Soriano registered a double-double when he set a career-high with 23 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 6-for-11 from the field and 11-for-14 at the free-throw line, along with two blocks. The performance marked his NCAA-leading 10th double-double of the season.
