Kadary Richmond of St. John's University has been named Division I Men’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
The designation, for games played Feb. 10-16, is unique in that it encompasses players from 21 Met area Division I schools.
This is the first MBWA weekly honor this season for Richmond, who earned the honor twice last season playing for Seton Hall.
A 6-6 graduate guard from Brooklyn, NY, Richmond --- who was named to the Big East weekly honor roll --- averaged team-highs of 18.0 points and 6.5 assists to go with 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals in a 1-1 week for the conference-leading, now No. 10-ranked Red Storm (22-4, 13-2 BEC).
St. John’s suffered a 73-71 loss at Villanova last Wednesday, then rebounded to topple then No. 24-ranked Creighton 79-73 on Sunday at Madison Square Garden.
Richmond scored 17 points and dished out 10 assists in the setback at Villanova that snapped a 10-game winning streak for the Johnnies.
He scored 19 points, grabbed nine rebounds and made four steals in the win over Creighton which extended St. John’s regular season homecourt winning streak to 18 games.
SJU erased a 10-point first half deficit and used a 10-0 run in just under six minutes of game action in the second half, bookended by a pair of baskets from Richmond, to regain a lead it would not relinquish.
Richmond shot 50% from the field (14-of-28) and was 7-of-8 at the free throw line during the two games.
