Max Zakheim of Yeshiva University has been named Divisions II/III Men’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
The designation, for games played Dec. 11-17, is unique in that it encompasses players from 48 Met area schools across Divisions II and III.
A 6-0 junior guard from Bergenfield, NJ, Zakheim --- who also was named the Skyline Conference player of the week --- averaged 31.0 points, 4.5 assists and 3.0 steals in leading the Maccabees (9-2) to a 2-0 week in league games. He shot 76.0% from the floor (19-of-25) and 79.2% at the free throw line (19-of-24) in an 87-63 homecourt victory over St. Joseph’s of Brooklyn on Tuesday and a 101-88 win at St. Joseph’s of Long Island on Sunday.
Zakheim began his week with 25 points, four assists and three steals against St. Joseph’s of Brooklyn in which he nailed 6-of-10 field goals and 11-of-13 free throws.
He led Yeshiva into the offensive century arena on Sunday with 37 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals, canning 13-of-15 shots from the field and 8-of-11 free throws.
The MBWA Players of the Week program will take a two-week holiday break and resume with games played Jan. 1-7. Nominations will have a deadline of 1 pm on Jan. 8 with winners announced on Jan. 9.
