Carolae Barton of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy has been named Divisions II/III Women’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
The designation, for games played Dec. 9-15, is unique in that it encompasses players from 49 Met area schools across Divisions II and III.
A 6-1 freshman forward from Waldorf, MD, Barton --- who also was named the Skyline Conference co-player of the week --- recorded a pair of double-doubles in the Mariners (8-1) two road wins last week that extended their unbeaten league record to 7-0 with a 69-63 triumph at St. Joseph’s Long Island on Wednesday and a 67-50 victory at St. Joseph’s Brooklyn on Saturday.
Barton averaged 23.0 points and 15.0 rebounds per game last week while shooting 55.6% from the floor.
She scored a career-high 31 points with a game-high 15 rebounds on Long Island, then followed with 15 points and 15 boards in Brooklyn.
Barton has posted six double-doubles this season and ranks in the top 17 nationally in Division III for double-doubles, field goal percentage (58.8%) and rebounds per game (13.0).
The MBWA Players of the Week program will take a two-week holiday break and resume with games played from Dec. 30 through Jan. 5.
