Heaven Figueroa of Lehman College has been named Divisions II/III Women’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
The designation, for games played Jan. 6-12, is unique in that it encompasses players from 49 Met area schools across Divisions II and III.
This is the first MBWA weekly honor for Figueroa.
A 5-7 graduate guard from Brooklyn, NY, Figueroa --- who also was named the CUNY Athletic Conference player of the week --- led the Lightning (7-7) to a pair of CUNYAC victories in which she averaged a scintillating 40.0 points, 12.0 rebounds, 6.5 steals and 5.0 assists.
Figueroa began her week on the road Wednesday by scoring 39 points and grabbing nine rebounds in a 72-54 victory over CCNY where she also had seven steals and three assists.
Two nights later she netted a career-high 41 points along with 15 rebounds, seven assists and six steals in a 69-59 homecourt triumph over Brooklyn. Figueroa was 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc and nailed 13-of-15 free throws.
The win ended a 12-game losing streak against the Bulldogs as the Lightning improved to 3-0 in conference play.
