Riley Weiss of Columbia University has been named Division I Women’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
The designation, for games played Jan. 20-26, is unique in that it encompasses players from 21 Met area Division I schools.
This is the first MBWA weekly honor for Weiss.
A 5-10 sophomore guard from Hewlett, NY, Weiss --- who also was named the Ivy League player of the week --- continued to post 3-point goals as the league-leading Lions (14-4, 5-0) defeated Princeton 58-50 and Penn 79-54 last week.
Weiss began the week Monday at home with eight points in 29 minutes on the floor against Princeton in a matchup of previously unbeaten teams in Ivy League games.
Then, on Saturday at home, Weiss registered a game- and career-high 25 points in 28 minutes against Penn, connecting on 8-of-11 shots from the field, including 6-of-9 from 3-point range and a perfect 3-of-3 at the foul line. Her six made 3s were the most of her career in a single game while she added four assists, three rebounds and two steals.
For the season, Weiss’ 17.2 points per game average leads the Lions and is third-best in the Ivy. Her 3.11 3-pointers per game rank No. 6 in NCAA Division I and her 56 made treys are tied for 15th nationally.
Saturday’s victory kept Columbia alone atop the Ivy League standings. The Lions have won seven straight overall and extended their home winning streak to 19 straight games dating back to last season.
