NEW YORK (Feb. 4, 2025) ---
Riley Weiss of Columbia University has been named Division I Women’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
The designation, for games played Jan. 27-Feb 2, is unique in that it encompasses players from 21 Met area Division I schools.
This is the second consecutive MBWA weekly honor for Weiss.
A 5-10 sophomore guard from Hewlett, NY, Weiss --- who also was named the Ivy League player of the week for a second straight week --- averaged 25.5 points and 6.0 rebounds last week as the Ivy League leading Lions (16-4, 7-0) claimed a pair of road victories, defeating Harvard 80-71 on Friday and Dartmouth 71-48 on Saturday.
Over the two games, Weiss shot 51.5% (17-of-33) from the field, including 56.3% (9-of-16) from 3-point range, and was a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line.
She scored a career-high 26 points (9-17 FG, 5-9 3FG) against Harvard and the nation’s team-leading defense (50.9 ppg).
Weiss followed with 25 points (8-16 FG, 4-7 3FG) at Dartmouth in just 25 minutes on the floor, scoring Columbia’s first 12 points in the third quarter to propel the Lions to a 16-point lead.
Columbia is riding a nine-game winning streak and pushed its consecutive Ivy League victory string to 17 games.
