Samuels, Chambers, Renker Snare Women's Players of the Week

NEW YORK (Jan. 30, 2019) --- Shadeen Samuels of Seton Hall in Division I for the second time this season, and Bionca Chambers of Felician and Charlotte Renker of Old Westbury as co-winners in Divisions II-III, have been named Women’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.

The MBWA designations, for games played Jan. 21-27, are unique in that they encompass players from 73 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.

A 6-0 junior forward from Ossining, NY, Samuels --- who also was named the Big East Conference player of the week and previously received the MBWA weekly honor on Jan. 15 --- averaged 27.5 points and 12.5 rebounds as the Pirates (13-7) in a pair of home games narrowly lost to Villanova 70-66 and defeated Georgetown 76-63.

Samuels began the past weekend by posting 27 points, a career-high 16 rebounds, two blocks and four assists on Friday against Villanova. She followed with a game-high 28 points and nine rebounds against Georgetown on Sunday. Overall for the weekend Samuels hit 52.9% of her shots (18-of-34) from the floor, along with 3-of-6 from 3-point range and 16-of-18 from the free throw line.

A 5-7 sophomore guard from the Bronx, NY, Chambers --- who also was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference player of the week --- averaged 26.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 3.0 blocks and 2.0 steals while shooting 47.6% from 3-point range (10-of-21) as the Golden Falcons (5-11) split a pair of road games, defeating Post (CT) 89-85 and losing to Goldey-Beacom 68-56.

Chambers scored 34 points, the most by a Felician women’s player in five years, along with tying the school record of six 3-point field goals, in the win over Post. She added three blocks, three steals and four rebounds in the game. Next, she registered 19 points, five rebounds, three blocks and three assists against Goldey-Beacom.

A 6-2 senior center from Mineola, NY, Renker --- who also was named the Skyline Conference player of the week --- notched her 14th double-double of the season and 42nd of her career in leading the Panthers (15-4) to victory in their only game of the week, a 70-57 triumph at Farmingdale State. Renker struck for 21 points and 23 rebounds in that contest, and is now eighth in the nation in Division III with 13.8 rebounds per game and among the top 10 nationally in double-doubles this season.

Renker's selection represents the second consecutive week the MBWA has honored a player from Old Westbury, following Davida Warren's designation last week.
