Johnson, Aponte Capture Women's Weekly Awards
   

NEW YORK (Feb. 13, 2019) --- Stella Johnson of Rider in Division I for the third time this season, and Jade Aponte of Hunter in Divisions II-III, have been named Women’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
 
The MBWA designations, for games played Feb. 4-10, are unique in that they encompass players from 73 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and II


A 5-10 junior guard from Denville, NJ, Johnson --- who also was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the week and previously received the MBWA weekly designation on Jan. 8 and Jan. 22 --- averaged 23.5 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals as the Broncs (14-9) notched a pair of homecourt victories. For the week, she shot 47.1% (8-of-17) from 3-point range and nailed 11-of-12 free throws.
 
Johnson recorded her second double-double of the season with 24 points and 10 rebounds, plus five assists and four steals, in a 65-50 victory over Monmouth. She capped her week with 23 points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals in a 70-64 win over Marist.
 
With a 75-64 victory over Iona on Tuesday evening, the Broncs are off to their best 12-game start (10-2) in the team’s MAAC history.
 
A 5-5 senior guard from Baldwin, NY, Aponte --- who also was named the CUNY Athletic Conference player of the week --- averaged 26.5 points and nabbed 12 steals overall in helping the Hawks (15-9) to a key 71-62 league win over Staten Island and a 74-43 triumph at Baruch.
 
Aponte produced a season-high 30 points along with five steals and four rebounds at home against Staten Island. She then registered 23 points and seven steals against Baruch, and now leads the CUNY in scoring with 18.4 ppg and is second in steals with 85.
 
With a 71-49 victory over CCNY on Monday, Hunter now leads the CUNY conference with a 14-1 record.
