Hovren, Johnson, Croswell Take Women's Weekly Honors
NEW YORK (Feb. 19, 2019) --- Madison Hovren of Army West Point and Jade Johnson of St. Francis Brooklyn, as co-winners in Division I, and Kayla Croswell of FDU Florham in Divisions II-III have been named Women’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The MBWA designations, for games played Feb. 11-17, are unique in that they encompass players from 73 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and II
The weekly honor is the second this season for both Hovren and Croswell, while Johnson represents the first women’s player from St. Francis to receive the designation in the MBWA’s weekly program that spans 2004-05 through 2008-09 and 2014-15 through the current season.
A 5-11 senior forward from Spokane, WA, Hovren helped Army (10-14) to a pair of road victories last week by averaging 15 points and 14.5 rebounds per game.
Hovren racked up 18 rebounds along with 13 points in a midweek 64-40 triumph at Lafayette, then followed with 17 points and 11 rebounds as the Black Knights earned a season sweep over Navy by coasting to a 60-48 victory.
Hovren achieved three milestones against Navy: She extended her all-time Army record for double-doubles to 50; she surpassed 1,000 career rebounds; and she joined Katie Macfarlane (2000-04) as only the second Cadet all-time to exceed 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds.
A 5-9 junior guard from Adelaide, Australia, Johnson averaged 31.5 points in a 1-1 week as the Terriers (15-10) were edged on the road at Wagner 87-85 and then defeated LIU Brooklyn at home 87-64.
Johnson registered 30 points against Wagner and 33 against LIU. Overall she hit nine 3-point goals, including seven in the Wagner game, and was a perfect 10-for-10 at the free throw line.
A 5-7 senior guard-forward from Norwalk, CT, Croswell --- who also was named the MAC Freedom Conference player of the week --- averaged 29 points and 11 rebounds to go along with 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists in a 2-0 week for the Devils (9-16). She shot 50% from the field (19-of-38) and nailed 82.6% (19-of-23) at the free throw line in the two games.
Croswell posted 26 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the field, plus 10 rebounds, in a 76-64 victory at Manhattanville. Next she notched a career-high 32 points, along with 12 rebounds, in an 84-80 homecourt win over Wilkes.
