Cavanaugh, Hovren, Nicholson Net Final Women's Weekly Awards of Season
NEW YORK (Feb. 26, 2019) --- Bre Cavanaugh of Fordham and Madison Hovren of Army West Point, as co-winners in Division I, and Nicole Nicholson of Concordia in Divisions II-III, have been named Women’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The MBWA designations, for games played Feb. 18-24, are unique in that they encompass players from 73 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and II
The weekly honor for Hovren represents her second consecutive designation and third overall this season, having previously been selected Dec. 11 and Feb. 19.
A 5-8 sophomore guard from Allamuchy, NJ, Cavanaugh helped the Rams (20-8) to their seventh straight win in their only game of the week, a 76-64 homecourt triumph over Massachusetts. She matched her season high for the third time with 27 points on 10-of-19 shooting, equaled her season best with five 3-pointers, and added six rebounds, three assists and a steal.
A 5-11 senior forward from Spokane, WA, Hovren produced a pair of double-doubles in averaging 21 points and 13.5 rebounds during a 1-1 week for the Black Knights (11-15), who beat Holy Cross 60-53 at home and then lost at Lehigh 55-46.
Hovren, who shot 46.4% from the floor in the two games and canned 16-of-23 at the free throw line, registered 21 points and 15 rebounds against Holy Cross, then totaled 21 points and 12 rebounds at Lehigh.
A 5-6 junior guard from Staten Island, NY, Nicholson averaged 19.5 points and 5.0 steals --- hitting 53.8% from the floor, including 46.2% of her 3-point shots --- as Concordia (7-19) won a pair of road games last week.
She scored 17 points to go with five steals and three rebounds in a 66-61 victory over Nyack, then posted 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor plus five steals and four rebounds in an 85-72 win at Felician.
