Samuels, Coutu Snare WBB Weekly Honors
NEW YORK (Feb. 5, 2019) --- Shadeen Samuels of Seton Hall in Division I for the second consecutive week and third time this season, and Sarah Coutu of Manhattanville in Divisions II-III, have been named Women’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The MBWA designations, for games played Jan. 28-Feb. 3, are unique in that they encompass players from 73 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and II
A 6-0 junior forward from Ossining, NY, Samuels --- who previously received the MBWA weekly honor on Jan. 15 and Jan. 30--- averaged 27.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in a 1-1 homecourt weekend for the Pirates (14-8), who lost to Xavier 80-76 and rebounded to beat Butler 83-61.
Samuels registered 28 points, five rebounds and five assists last Friday in the loss to Xavier, then followed with a double-double of 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting along with 10 rebounds and a game-high three blocks in the conference win over second-place Butler on Sunday.
A 5-6 sophomore guard from Cranston, RI, Coutu averaged 29.0 points in a 2-0 week for the Valiants (16-4), who defeated Wilkes 81-72 on the road and then beat No. 25-ranked Misericordia 61-58 at home.
Coutu began with a career-best 31 points while adding four rebounds, four assists and three steals in the win at Wilkes. She then totaled a game-high 27 points to go with five rebounds, three steals and two assists in the triumph over Misericordia.
