NEW YORK (Feb. 13, 2024) ---
Abbey Hsu of Columbia University has been named Division I Women’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
The designation, for games played Feb. 5-11, is unique in that it encompasses players from 21 Met area Division I schools.
This marks Hsu's fifth-career MBWA Player of the Week honor, and her third this season (Dec. 5, Dec. 12).
A 5-11 senior guard from Parkland, FL, Hsu --- who also was named the Ivy League player of the week --- scored 23 points and registered a career-high 13 rebounds to lead the Lions (16-5) to a 90-73 homecourt victory Friday over Brown in Columbia’s lone game last week.
Hsu nailed 7-of-14 shots from the floor, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, and was a perfect 5-of-5 at the free throw line, while tacking on four assists and two steals.
The output was her fourth double-double of 20+ points and 10+ rebounds this season. Hsu leads the Ivy League in scoring (21.3 ppg, No. 15 in the nation), 3-point shooting percentage (38.9%), 3-point field goals per game (3.0, No. 8 in nation) and 3-pointers made (63, No. 22 nationally).
Hsu moved into a tie for fifth on the Ivy League women's basketball all-time scoring list (1,962). She is 11 points from tying and 12 from breaking Columbia's all-time record (men's and women's) held by Camille Zimmerman (1,973 points).
The Lions (7-1) are currently in second place in the Ivy League, a game behind Princeton (8-0).
This is the next-to-last announcement by the MBWA for its 2023-24 Players of the Week program, which concludes next week.
