NEW YORK (Feb. 25, 2025) ---
Riley Weiss of Columbia University has been named Division I Women’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
The designation, for games played Feb 17-23, is unique in that it encompasses players from 21 Met area Division I schools.
This is the third MBWA weekly award for Weiss this season.
A 5-11 sophomore guard from Hewlett, NY, Weiss --- who also was named the Ivy League player of the week --- scored a career-high 32 points on the road Saturday as the Lions (19-5, 10-1 Ivy) in their only game of the week defeated Princeton 64-60 to capture sole possession of first place in the Ivy League.
Weiss nailed 52.4% (11-of-21) of her shots from the field, including 45.5% (5-of-11) from 3-point range, along with 7-of-7 perfection at the free throw line. She added three rebounds, two assists and two steals in the victory.
She scored 16 fourth-quarter points to lead Columbia back from a six-point deficit (44-38) entering the period and tallied 10 straight points during a 13-0 run whereby the Lions snared a 51-44 lead.
The loss snapped Princeton’s 30-game home winning streak, which was the longest active streak in the NCAA.
Weiss ranks No. 5 nationally in Division I in 3-pointers made per game (3.17) and No. 15 in total threes made (76). She is second in the Ivies in scoring (18.2 ppg) and leads the league in 3-point percentage (.384).
This was the last week of the season for the MBWA 2024-25 Players of the Week program.
Over the next few weeks, the Met Writers group will be selecting its All-Met men’s and women’s teams for Divisions I, II and III. All-Met players and coaches will be honored Thursday evening, April 24, at the 92nd MBWA All-Met Haggerty Awards Dinner set for the Sleepy Hollow Hotel & Conference Center in Tarrytown, NY.
