Messiah Mallory of the College of Staten Island has been named Divisions II/III Men’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
The designation, for games played Dec. 5-11, is unique in that it encompasses players from 45 Met area schools across Divisions II and III.
A 6-7 sophomore forward-center from Watervliet, NY, Mallory --- who also was named the East Coast Conference player of the week --- averaged a double-double of 25.0 points and 10.5 rebounds to go with 2.5 assists and 2.0 blocks in a pair of homecourt victories for the Dolphins (3-6) last week. He shot 64.5% (20-of-31) from the field and only came off the floor for less than one minute across the two games.
In Tuesday's 74-63 victory over the University of the District of Columbia, Mallory scored a season-high 29 points on 12-of-17 accuracy from the floor along with a perfect 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. He also had 13 rebounds and two blocks.
On Saturday in a 69-64 triumph over American International College, Mallory scored 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 at the free throw line while snaring eight rebounds and blocking two shots. CSI trailed by as many as nine in the second half, but Mallory's 13 points in the final 13 minutes helped lead a victorious comeback. His conventional three-point play late provided the Dolphins with a three-point lead in securing the win.
