Tray Alexander of Pace University has been named Divisions II/III Men’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
The designation, for games played Feb. 12-18, is unique in that it encompasses players from 48 Met area schools across Divisions II and III.
This was the first MBWA Player of the Week accolade for Alexander.
A 5-10 senior guard from Freeport, NY, Alexander --- who also was named the Northeast 10 Conference player of the week --- helped the Setters (15-10) notch a pair of victories last week, defeating Assumption 79-73 in overtime at home on Wednesday and edging Southern New Hampshire 70-68 on the road last Saturday.
Alexander recorded the first triple-double in program history, the first in the NE10 this season and the 14th in NCAA Division II for 2023-24, in the OT win over Assumption. He finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for the game, and either scored or assisted on all of Pace’s points in the final 13 minutes of regulation.
On Saturday in the Setters first victory at SNHU since 2006, Alexander produced 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals for Pace, which is tied for fourth in the NE10 (11-8) as the team gears up for the playoffs.
Alexander is No. 1 nationally in Division II in assists average with 7.0 per game and is second in total assists with 169.
This was the last week for the MBWA 2023-24 Players of the Week program.
Over the next few weeks, the Met Writers group will be selecting its All-Met men’s and women’s teams for Divisions I, II and III. All-Met players and coaches will be honored Thursday evening, April 18, at the 91st MBWA All-Met Haggerty Awards Dinner set for the Sleepy Hollow Hotel & Conference Center in Tarrytown, NY.
