Brooklyn's Jemmott and NJCU's Rodriguez Share Final Women's Divs. II/III Met Weekly Honor

NEW YORK (March 1, 2022) --- Chanel Jemmott of Brooklyn and Damaris Rodriguez of NJCU have been named Women's Divisions II/III Co-Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.

The designation, for games played Feb. 21-27, is unique in that it encompasses players from 48 Met area schools across Divisions II and III.

Rodriguez’s selection is her second of the season, having previously been honored on Feb. 15.

A 5-9 graduate forward from Brooklyn, NY, Jemmott --- who was named CUNY Athletic Conference tournament MVP for a third time in her career and the conference player of the year for a second consecutive season --- led the Bulldogs (21-3) to a repeat CUNY championship (last in 2020, there was no basketball in 2020-21) and a berth this coming Friday in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Jemmott was very efficient in Brooklyn’s 77-45 semifinal win over Hunter, scoring 19 points, grabbing six rebounds and nabbing three steals in just 25 minutes on the court. She connected on 6-of-12 shots overall from the field, 1-of-3 from beyond the arc and 6-of-8 at the free throw line.

In last Friday’s 59-51 championship victory over John Jay, Jemmott scored 18 points and grabbed 20 rebounds while adding four steals and a block.

She now has accumulated 1,636 career points and 1,194 rebounds as the all-time leader at BC in both categories and one of only four players in CUNY history to achieve at least 1,600 points and 1,000 rebounds.

Brooklyn, with its third conference title in the past four playoffs, travels to Smith College in Northampton, MA, on Friday to meet Emmanuel College in the first round of the NCAAs.

A 5-3 sophomore guard from Secaucus, NJ, Rodriguez helped lead the Gothic Knights (13-0) to three New Jersey Athletic Conference tournament victories last week, including a back-to-back conference title and first ticket to the NCAA Division III tournament in program history.

She played all possible 120 minutes and averaged 21.3 points, 7.3 assists and 6.7 rebounds as NJCU posted road game triumphs over regionally ranked Montclair State (68-67) in a quarterfinal and Rowan (83-74) in the semifinals, and then topped TCNJ (58-53) as the Gothic Knights hosted their first-ever NJAC title game.

In a comeback victory over Montclair State last Tuesday, Rodriguez poured in a game-best 28 points to go with a team-high six assists, plus four rebounds, a block and a steal. She dropped a game-winning buzzer-beating floater to send NJCU to the NJAC semis.

Then, in Thursday's win at Rowan, Rodriguez once again led all players in scoring with 25 points to go with nine boards and a game-best 10 assists for her ninth double-double of the season.

She closed out the week in the championship tilt with an all-around performance, scoring 11 points to go with seven boards plus game-highs in assists (6) and steals (2).

Rodriguez currently is second nationally in Division III for assists (7.3 per game) and eighth in scoring (21.2 ppg).

NJCU plays Friday in the opening round of the NCAAs at host Scranton, PA.
