NEW YORK (Feb. 15, 2022) ---
Demetre Roberts of St. Thomas Aquinas and
Bobby Hawkinson from NYU have been named Divisions II/III Co-Men’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
The designation, for games played Feb. 7-13, is unique in that it encompasses players from 48 Met area schools across Divisions II and III.
A 6-10 senior forward from Frankfort, IL, Hawkinson --- who also was named the University Athletic Association player of the week --- led the Violets (12-9) to three away victories last week and a sweep of a UAA road weekend for the first time since the 2015-16 season. NYU beat Moravian 77-73; No. 24 Case Western Reserve 77-70; and Carnegie Mellon 77-57.
Hawkinson registered a double-double in all three contests, averaging 20.7 points and 15.3 rebounds.
A senior captain, Hawkinson began the week with 15 points (5-11 FG, 5-9 FT), 12 rebounds, three blocks, two assists and a steal at Moravian.
He followed with a dominant performance in a road win over Case Western Reserve, producing 25 points (7-11 FG, 11-18 FT), 19 boards, five assists and a block.
Hawkinson concluded the week with 22 points (9-12 FG, 4-8 FT), 15 rebounds, three assists and a block in the Violets' rout of Carnegie Mellon.
Hawkinson pushed his double-double total to 17, which ties for the national lead with two others. He’s among the best in the nation in several other categories as well: third in the UAA and 46th in the nation in scoring (20.3 ppg), first in the UAA and sixth in the nation in rebounding (13.4 rpg), and second in the league and ninth nationally in field-goal shooting percentage (65.4%).
A 5-8 senior guard from Mount Vernon, NY, Roberts --- who also was named the East Coast Conference player of the week --- averaged 23.3 points, 6.8 assists and 3.8 rebounds in a 4-0 ECC week for the Spartans (20-4), who stretched their winning streak to 8 games. STAC defeated Molloy and Queens each twice in a pair of home-and-away series last week.
Roberts shot 52.5% (32-of-61) from the floor, 40.9% (9-of-22) from downtown and 80.0% (20-of-25) from the foul-line in 104-92 and 82-78 triumphs over Molloy, and 71-59 and 75-68 victories over Queens.
Roberts posted a career-high 36 points, with three rebounds and five assists at home against Molloy, followed by 24 points, four rebounds and six assists at Molloy.
